A terrace of 3 Victorian farmers’ cottages was to be redeveloped. The redevelopment required a replacement ground floor slab and the developer elected to incorporate a new foundation to the cottages into the new floor slab.
The existing timber floor was removed and we reduced the ground level beneath the cottages for the construction depth of the new slab and heave protection measures. At this depth the ground was prepared for the restricted access piling rig to work on. We installed 26 300mm diameter bored piles to depths of 9m and on a grid within the shell of the cottages. A short section of RC ground beam was installed for a new rear addition to the cottages.
Pockets were then excavated in the existing footings to accept sacrificial stools upon which the building was temporarily supported. The new RC floor slab was cast across the new piles and beneath the cut-back brickwork, transferring the structural load through the new RC slab and into the piles.
