To form an underground swimming pool and gymnasium within the rear gardens of adjoining properties in North London, a permanent retaining wall formed with contiguous piles was chosen. The ground conditions comprise dry gravelly sands with some clay and as such the piled wall wasn’t required to be waterproof; we therefore proposed contiguous piles with 150mm inter-pile gaps in lieu of the more costly steel sheet pile or interlocking secant pile options.
